Early in the morning, I catched Nantou bus (南投客運) to Xitou (溪頭). It took 1 1/2 hours to from Taichung (臺中) to Xitou.
Nantou County has many attractions, such as Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), Cingjing Farm (清境農場), as well as Xitou Nature Education Area (溪頭教育園區).
Located in Nantou Lugu Town (南投鹿谷鄉), Xitou Nature Education Area has an altitude of 1,150 meters with an area of 2,500 hectares. It is the experimental forest of the National Taiwan University (NTU). There are diverse varieties of plants including red Chinese cypresses, ginkgo trees and cypress. It is also an excellent place for bird-watching area. According to its information, there are more than 7,000 bird species have been spotted in the area. However, after spent whole day at Xitou Nature Education Area, I only saw two kinds of birds.
University Pond (大學池) is the landmark of Xitou Nature Education Area with a bamboo bridge right above the pond.
The showpiece of the park is the named Sacred Tree (神木), a 2,800-year-old red cypress that has survived many lightning strikes. The Tree is hollow and unusable due to a fungus spared the blade.
