Road Trip - Crescent City 08-17-2013

We had an extra day in Crescent City because we were ahead our schedule.  We decided to go visit Tolowa Dunes State Park, Lake Earl Wildlife Area, and Brother Jonathan Vista Point.

We walked about 1½ hours in Tolowa Dunes State Park before we reached our destination – beach.  A beautiful beach where has many types of birds such as Pelicans, Cormorants, Seagulls, and Bald Eagles.

After the beach, we walked another 1 hour back to the parking lot.  On the way back to the parking lot, we saw a snail which looks like a banana.  Can you guess what the name of the snail?  It is called … Banana Snail.  We also saw two bald eagles circling above our heads.  I guessed they thought we were their … lunch.

Lake Earl Wildlife Area is next to Tolowa Dunes State Park. Lake Earl Wildlife Area is the largest coastal lagoon on the continental West Coast outside of Alaska, and there are 317 species of birds have been recorded.  We could not see any bird around Lake Earl area because there is vegetation growing along the shoreline of the lake and we could not close to the lake.  However, we saw a protected species called Northern Red Legged Frog (Rana aurora).  It is considered a true frog because it has smooth skin and a narrow waist.  This frog requires still waters for breeding and is normally found around its breeding ponds or marshes.

Brother Jonathan Vista Point is a big park with the walkway around the shoreline. At Vista Point, residence and visitors can enjoy the sound of the sea, the smell of the sea, and don’t’ forget the abundant sunshine.

  1. You are in one of our favorites places, Cathy! I hope you got to see the sea lions on the docks at Crescent City. Also, don't miss the Jedidiah Smith Redwood Forest north of there. What a great trip you're on! Donna
