Taiwan - Nangan, Matsu 2015-11-01

The weather was nicer today.  Friend and I with other two people took ferry to Nangan (南竿).

Nangan is an island in the Matsu region of Taiwan.  It is the primary and governing island for the Matsu Islands. It is also the largest of the islands.

Since Nangan is the main island, there is massive military presence on the island. China is only a few miles off the coast and is easy to see on a clear day.

First stop, we went to Tunnel 88 (88坑道).  This tunnel was built centuries ago to defend the locals from pirates. Later it was used by the military and now it is used by the Matsu Distillery (馬祖酒場).

Matsu Distillery is known for its Rice Wine, Gaoliang (高梁).  As soon as, we walked in Distillery, we could not miss the incredibly strong of rice wine.

Nioujiao (牛角村) - Fuxing Village (復興鄉). Beautiful granite village built at the edge of a mountain on the sea.

Beihai Tunnel (北海坑道) was carved by soldiers using only simple hand tools, construction of this 700m tunnel began in 1968 and took three years to complete. It was large enough to hide 120 small vessels in case of attack.
